Dentists & Orthodontists’ Music: What Calms Patients’ Anxiety?

September 24, 2020

We begin with the question does music calm anxiety in the dental clinic? Well, it may be a matter of taste and preference. Personally, I cannot see or hear a truck load of death metal or rap music soothing my worries in the chair but each to his own I say. Dentists and orthodontists’ music: What calms patients’ anxiety? Ambient muzak is most often served up in these situations, as fodder for the frayed nerves of the dental patient. Something to combat the high-powered whine of the electric drill, as it screams its way inside your head. What are the favourite tracks of torturers? This comes to mind in this particular search for the truth.

I Doubt If Any Soothing Music Can Calm in These Circumstances

During invasive surgery such as dental implants will the sounds of gently crashing waves and whale cries invoke a sense of peace? I ponder whether the breathy whistles of South American pan pipes can nullify the bloody gurgling extraction of a molar? In fact, as I sit here contemplating my memories of dental surgeries, I doubt if any soothing music can match the gore and stabbing nature of this business. Today, we use terms like ‘invasive surgery’ to sterilise the bloody truth of the matter at hand. Our mouths are intimate places, usually, reserved for mastication and sensual pleasures. In the hands of dentists, they become war zones, where collateral damage occurs on the journey to oral hygiene.

I Worry About Dentists & Abattoir Workers

Marketing the gentler aspects of dental work is a full-time job to overcome the realities of such a bloody and painful profession. I worry about people who work in abattoirs and I worry about dentists. I am concerned about their proclivity toward blood and violence. This leads me back to the question concerning dentists and orthodontists’ music: What calms patients’ anxiety? Perhaps, the muzak is played more for their own benefit than for the patients in the chair?

Some music like nightclub music doesn’t suit the content and I pity the patient exposed to the beat of such noxious rumblings whilst strapped in the chair. We all know the experience of having hands down your throat holding instruments of sharp torture. Imagine this to the soundtrack of Tin Machine or Megadeth? I pity the victims of deranged dentists, those that have crossed the Rubicon of common decency and found themselves in the realms of Nazi concentration camps.

Kid-friendly activities that are suitable for your kids during vacations

Kid-friendly activities that are suitable for your kids during vacations

January 10, 2020

As parents, our kid’s happiness is always a top priority and considering the school holidays are already around the corner, parents are already looking for activities that will keep them entertained and teach them a few skills here and there throughout their vacation. Ideally, these activities should be done as a family to strengthen the bond and share the experiences however depending on your professional commitments you can have other adults accompany them to the activities which you have settled on. All in all, these activities should not pose any risks of injury to the kids and if so adult supervision protective wear should be insisted.  A few  safe activities during the school holidays from which parent can choose from include;

Visiting the zoo

Zoo visitation can make good fun and educative experience which families can share especially with kids under the age of 10. The zookeepers will teach kids about various animal behaviors their habitats etc. and they may let the kids get close to harmless animals and take pictures with them.

Horse and bike riding

There are specially designed parks with safe tracks for bike riding and horseback riding which families can do together. Beginners can be trained on how to ride bicycles or horses depending on their interests however children should always wear helmets and other protective gear when riding on the tracks.

Attending cooking classes

Just like adults, some kids enjoy cooking and are looking forward to learning and try out new recipes. Both parents and their kids can attend these cooking classes such as Our Big Kitchen and learn various recipes before they make these new meals which they have learned. Furthermore, cooking competitions can be arranged to see which children come up with the best meals and in the end, they get to enjoy their meal.

Visiting art galleries

Art can be very inspiring to these young kids expanding their imagination and molding young artists into talented young individuals. Kids get the chance to immerse themselves into this creative world of art, take photographs with various works that they like which if fun as it is educative. The paintings and sculptures which they see may become an inspiration to some and with commitment and discipline, a new artist can be born from it.

Create Movies & TV

StarTime are inspiring the next generation of creative leaders. Our workshops are designed to develop more empathetic human beings. We do this by underpinning our school incursions and excursions with the values of courage, commitment, collaboration and communication. StarTime helps schools (K-12) embed filmmaking as an effective and practical way to achieve curriculum outcomes. We do this through our integrated school incursions, school holiday programs, creative kids activities, professional development for teachers and filmmaking equipment for schools.

Swimming

Parents and kids can decide to go either the beach or swimming pools that have however for safety you should consider those which have lifeguards for emergencies. The kids should have inflated floaters to keep them from sinking and should be within reach of their parents especially on coastline beaches. Swimming pools usually have especially designed pools with standardised depth for kids however they should be given floating gear if they are to swim in the adult area.

Camping

There are various safe camping sites where parents can choose to take their kids for a camping experience and show them a few survival skills for use in the wild.  Skills such as pitching a tent, lighting a fire, hunting for food, calling out for help among others can be very beneficial in the future in the event one finds him/herself lost in the woods in the future. Much better than kids being addicted to gaming and social media – camping is truly natural, essential and divine.

Significant things to note about Biltong

Significant things to note about Biltong

January 9, 2020

Biltong is a famous South African dried, ready to eat snack that involves cutting meats into thin strips, mixing with various ingredients and drying which naturally preserves the meat eliminating the need to refrigerate.  Biltong can be purchased mostly on every South African grocery stores. A number of meats can be used in the production of Biltong from beef, fish fillets, game meat, etc. however the strips should be preferably not thicker than 1 cm to enable them to dry quickly before going bad. Currently owing to in nutritional value this South African biltong beef jerky has grown its popularity worldwide becoming a preferable alternative to other snacks such as potato chips, popcorns, etc. and as a result, most snack manufacturers are adding Biltong to their product lines.

Why chose Biltong over other snacks?

As consumers, we are always looking for healthier foods and snacks that ensure our nutritional requirements are met and great taste to enjoy along with the other benefits. Biltong is tender which makes it easy to chew with additional traditional ingredients that give it the desired great taste for you to enjoy. Furthermore, the snack is a healthier alternative to other snacks with sufficient iron, natural proteins that are crucial for muscle growth and maintenance which is very important for athletes and other sports personalities as well as a good source of vitamin B12 responsible for the development of red blood cells. Despite these many benefits, it is good to note that “too much of anything poisonous” and therefore should be eaten with moderation considering in excess its likely to result in weight gain and high cholesterol in the body.

Steps followed in making Biltong

The South African ways of making Biltong involves a series of steps that will ultimately result in one of the most delicious snacks for you to enjoy with friends and family. However, you need the knowledge and patience to come up with the best Biltong and it generally involves steps such as;

  • Selection of the meats

There are many different types of meat which can be used in the development of Biltong however I recommend beef for beginners considering it is more likely to suit most tastes. You should avoid fatty meats to minimize the probability of spoilage during the drying process and bearing in mind that drying will lead to a significant loss in mass you should buy in bulk match with the amount of finished snacks which you want to make

  • Meat preparation

It is always advisable to first remove any excess fats if any to prevent spoilage and increase the life of the end product. Afterward, cut the meat into slices preferably of thickness less than 1 cm to ensure it dries quickly before going bad and length of no longer than 20 cm. one of the simplest ways to prepare the meat slices for drying is basting and seasoning simultaneously. Use a wide tray to baste laying your steak slices on it and add an even layer of basting and seasoning on its surface. You can add other spices of choice depending on what you want the final snack to taste like.

  • Drying

The meat slices can be dried in a heat controlled chamber i.e. a Biltong maker that is also necessary for controlling flies swarming the meat slices. Humidity levels should be monitored and maintained at acceptable levels particularly during humid seasons to keep it from leading to spoilage of the snack. The drying process can take between a day to ten days depending on the drying method used and other preferences.

Make sure to always go for the highest quality South African food providers. Once familiar with this process, you can then experiment with different meats, drying techniques, basting and seasoning to ultimately come up with a biltong snack suited for you.

Music to Munch To

April 9, 2018

Music when you come to think about it is an interesting phenomenon. It is artificial, in that it is made by human beings, if we are to limit our discussion to the kind of music that is bought and sold. Natural music would be the wind in the trees and, perhaps, music made by other animals like birds. Its provenance is likely the reproduction of natural music generated by birdlife. Sounds are the vibrations travelling through the air or through another medium. Music is an arrangement or order of sounds which, usually, form a recognisable pattern. Ideas about what is music and what is, mere, noise have evolved over time. Music to munch to is about whether these sounds enhance the experience of consuming food.

Musical Accompaniments to Dining

Do you like to dine to a musical accompaniment? Or do you prefer the silence and the sounds of your own mastication? What aids your digestion and, perhaps, complements your appetite? Personally, I do not like to eat to busy music, unless I am out with friends and the focus is more on having a good time with companions. For some, eating is like love making. A friend once told me that if you want to know how a man makes love, just, watch him eat. Many men eat too quickly, gobbling rather than taking the time to savour the meal. This, however, is a discussion for another time.

Sounds that Tantalise but Do Not Monopolise

Music adds to both the cooking and eating experiences in my opinion. As someone who made their living as a chef for a period of time and still enjoys preparing food at home, I value the musical accompaniment because cooking can be like a dance. Getting back to my preference for music without too much going on, I think that clear space has its place in great music. It is like a good conversation, there must be room for listening. Ambient music is much like a soft landing due to a rubber surface making a potential catastrophe into a gentle moment. Music to munch to is best served by sounds that tantalise but do not monopolise.

Melding & Morphing into True Art

Do you play music when you make love? Or do you prefer the organic sounds of your own bump and grind? Music can encourage the inhibited and assist with rhythmic intensity. In the same way music to munch to can complement the savouring of superb tastes and textures within the mouth. All our senses are linked within our bodies and it can be a symphony of experiences melding and morphing into true art.

Slow Jam: Tantric Frequencies for Nights of Love

April 7, 2016

Music makes loving that much easier, as the rhythm and the beat gets that pelvis working overtime. Melody seduces the heart and mind, and then the vibrational frequencies get to work on the hips and behind. Nothing like a slow jam for some sticky contact later on in the night. Girl these moves were made for moving you; and even if I don’t know nothing about tantra I can improvise. Nights of love are best served by a musical accompaniment, my own house DJ is always on the job, and let’s take our time.

Base chakra moves are deep frequency, low hertz, and very vibrational. When we listen to that slow jam stuff we are all singing from the same sexy song sheet. The score of love I call it, and it scores more often than it flunks out. Get some Keith Sweat on that turntable and make it last all night long. Low down licks and grinding bass riffs can breathe life into even the most disconnected desirables. Drink from the cup of life and let your urges inch you along the stairway to heaven. Make It Last Forever, Keep It Comin’, Get Up On It, Til The Morning; there is a message in those song titles my friend.

Slow Jam: Tantric Frequencies for Nights of Love

The allure of love, thumps along inside your loins like a big truck coming down the highway. The slow jam is a primal beat, an instinctive thing not fit for contemplation. Those tantric frequencies are tuned to acts of procreation without no intention of having kids. Nights of love lean heavily on sensation and leave the intellectual in the locker for sometime later. Getting down is grist for the mill to grind out a beat for physical emancipation.

All those guys standing around making music, what’s that all about? You have to know their ultimate motivation, getting laid. Laying down riffs and melodies are all about acts of the hunter setting out his traps in the forest. Those dudes are leaving loud bait for the babes they hope to make at a later date. The sounds are juicy titbits attracting the aural pheromones of lovely ladies of the night. Music that makes you bend over to listen harder to what it all means; and by then it is too late to retreat from physical gratification. Girl get down to this slow jam and suck on the sweet marrow of life.

Frequencies and Audio Dynamics: Sharpening the Ear

April 6, 2016

Audio frequency is a periodic vibration that is audible to the human ear. The standard range is twenty to twenty thousand hertz (Hz). Frequencies under twenty Hz are usually felt rather then heard, if the amplitude of the vibration is large enough. Frequencies higher than twenty thousand Hz can occasionally be sensed by younger people. Perceptions of higher frequencies are the first to be lost by hearing problems caused by old age or damaged hearing due to prolonged exposure to loud noise.

Ear training, or developing aural skills, is a means by which musicians learn to recognize pitches, chords, rhythms, intervals and melody through listening. Although ear training is typically an aspect of formal musical training, parts of it can be used to sharpen the ear of those who wish to do so. There are a number of healing therapies which employ the use of sound frequencies and audio dynamics. Musical composes in the twentieth and twenty first centuries have explored sound frequencies and audio dynamics to create new types of music.

Frequencies and Audio Dynamics: Sharpening the Ear

A notable exponent of this new approach to musical composition is the Japanese artist Susumu Yokota AKA (Stevia or Ebi). Yokota was popular in the English speaking, independent music scene for his experimental electronic music. He was also well known as a house music DJ, and produced a number of celebrated house music albums. One of the most influential music composers of the later twentieth century is Philip Glass. He is an American composer, whose music is described as vibrational and minimalist. Philip Glass has composed the scores for many films including:  Koyaanisqatsi, Mishima, Kundun and Powaqqatsi, just to name a few. Philip Glass’s compositions exemplify the dynamics involved in the esoteric exploration of the subtleties of sound.

Another ground breaking American composer of audio dynamic music was John Cage (1912 – 1992). Cage was a leading member of the post-war avant-garde movement. His best known work is 4’33; and his music is synonymous with modern dance and eastern influences. John Cage produced innovative new music for the dance choreography program at the University of California Los Angeles; and taught a course on “Musical Accompaniments for Rhythmic Expression”.

Frequencies and Audio Dynamics: Sharpening the Ear

Understanding sound frequencies and audio dynamics allows both producers and listeners to experience new forms of music. This process can be likened to sharpening the ear, in its ability to perceive the full gamut of vibrational frequencies.

Music Merchandising: It’s Never Too Early to Start

April 5, 2016

tech music merchandise techno

Everyone knows that merchandising is vital to the survival of musical artists. Merchandise comes in all shapes and sizes, such as: CDs, posters, T shirts, mugs, cups, school bags, tote bags, toothbrushes and caps. I remember when I received my first Dora The Explorer tote bag; Its lurid pinkness was a statement in itself. Music merchandising extends even further into:  toiletry bags, tooth paste, lunchboxes, lollies, snacks, chips, figurines, stuffed toys, makeup, hair dryers, shampoo, conditioner, hair spray, clothing brands, perfume brands and even toy letterboxes.

At the highest level artists such as: Taylor Swift, Justin Bieber and Katy Perry are not necessarily making their money from the merchandise itself but from the commercial affect of all the publicity generated by the visibility of all that merchandising.  It is all about the marketing both digital and real world for these artists and pop bands. Every time a young person walks down an aisle of a K Mart or Wal-Mart they see images of these popstars on products. This promotes their core business; which is concert and CD sales. According to 2011 figures provided by the Future of Music Organization, music merchandising only accounts for around 6% of a pop band’s income.

Music Merchandising: It’s Never Too Early to Start

It’s stating the obvious that visual merchandising in particular targets a young audience to start with, as children like to develop ownership relationships with their celebrity heroes. Merchandising sales are greater in the holidays, especially during: Christmas, Halloween, and the school holidays. Pester power, when kids relentlessly nag their parents for toys and/or cool gadgets, is a big part of this type of marketing. The branded doll or item of clothing is usually more expensive and a ‘must have’ for the child or teenager.  Youngish pop stars are invariably chaperoned into merchandising their image by managers and publicists. The King and Queen of Pop are always ripe for consumer exploitation. Prince was one of the few superstars to avoid the commercial hoopla accompanying stardom.

Music merchandising runs from the sublime to the ridiculous, with examples such as; metal punk band Gwar’s BQ sauce; the aptly named Metallica ice pack; One Direction tooth brush and toothpaste; The Flaming Lip’s silver fetus Christmas ornament; and Deadmau5 headphones for cats. Music merchandising knows no bounds; and we will be seeing many more bizarre examples cropping up throughout the twenty first century, I am sure. It is no longer just a matter of buying a t shirt with your favorite band’s image on it; marketing and branding will make sure of that.

Healing Frequencies: Sounds to Soothe the Soul

April 5, 2016

Music is one of the great healers. There have been soothing sounds echoing throughout history from ancient times to the present. One thinks of the pan pipe, flute and harp; and Grecian temple music invoking the gods. Apollo and his lyre bestrode the Oracle of Delphi; forever linking music with the healing and divinatory arts. Today’s music continues that tradition, with Chill Out sounds helping dance party revelers come down from the peak.  Healing frequencies are at the fingertips of all great DJs as they twirl the knobs on their turntables and mixers.

Nature is full of sounds that we perceive with one of our five senses; and then process auditorily within our brains. Birdcalls screech and twitter and cicadas click and rustle. The wind wails and thunder rumbles. Rain clatters and drums. Noises and sounds are everywhere in a multitude of arrangements composed by existence. For believers these natural sounds were proof of god’s presence behind the veil of reality. The puppet master was pulling the strings and being the sound guy for his own production.

Healing Frequencies: Sounds to Soothe the Soul

Alternative healers in the twenty first century utilize soothing sounds just as the temple high priestesses did in antiquity. I have had opera sung into parts of my body, whilst lying prostrate on a massage table. I have chanted with Indians around a brazier filled with burning cow dung. I have writhed naked in a sweat lodge with sixty others similarly attired, as our spiritual leader intoned about bears, wolves and salmon. In each of these situations sound has been an integral part of the experience. Trance dance music can weave a sonic spell about its adherents; transporting them to another dimension of reality. Indigenous tribes have been using music as such devices for millennia.

Mothers sing lullabies to their babies to soothe and communicate love. Is there any clearer example of sound’s healing frequencies ability to soothe the soul? Auditory processing is vital for all human beings to feel at home within their own skin in a world full of sounds. If a child or an adult cannot distinguish sounds near and far, then the confusion created is deeply unsettling. It will result in that individual withdrawing into his or her shell or lashing out aggressively as a coping mechanism. Calming music in a quiet room can help the sufferer of auditory disorders regain some composure within themselves.

How To Digitally Promote Your Band in The Post Myspace Era

How To Digitally Promote Your Band in The Post Myspace Era

March 31, 2016

There was a time when Myspace was the de facto platform for bands to promote their music. It used to have everything for music lovers and enthusiast. Blending music streaming with social features contributed to its popularity. And best of all it’s a place where you can go and play any song from a major label for free. Venture around the site and you will clearly see it is centred around music, from featured headlines to Q&A columns to blog articles. It has users who turn to it for new music inspiration and entertainment discovery. But it plummeted in user base and visitor frequency in the advent of Facebook because it presented a better option.

The popularity of social media sites has greatly altered the way bands promote themselves. In the post Myspace era, other social media sites have emerged for sharing and promoting music online. SoundCloud became the front-runner for music and sharing discovery. Unlike Myspace, SoundCloud can be embedded anywhere and it let fans comment on parts of a recording. It became a darling of bands and fans who use the site to listen, comment and share the work of their favourite bands.
